Prof Malcolm Kell
Malcolm Kell has worked as a consultant surgeon and clinical professor within the national breast screening program in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin, Ireland since 2005. Malcolm graduated from the University of Glasgow and trained in Scotland, England and Ireland then completed his research in surgical immunology at Brigham and Womens’ Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston. Higher Surgical training was with the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and then surgical oncology fellowship training at Fox Chase Cancer Centre, Philadelphia.
Clinical and research interests have focused to develop accelerated care pathways to facilitate and expedite patient care. Research has explored methods to enhance patients’ aesthetic outcome following breast cancer surgery and applied this to clinical practice. The sum of these clinical protocols is to apply best evidence practice, to ensure patients have not only optimum cancer outcome but also excellent survivorship. Laboratory based collaborations have helped to explore novel therapeutic strategies for triple negative breast cancer. Over 150 publications, numerous supervised post-doctoral students and fellowship trainees have helped to develop cancer care within Ireland.
Professor Kell acted as Lead Surgeon in Breasthealth, Mater Misericordiae University hospital, was chair of the symptomatic cancer centres to the National Cancer Control Program Ireland, has chaired the Institutional Review Board in the Mater campus since 2009 and is a committee member of the Health Research Consent Declaration Committee. Malcolm is past president of the Society of Irish Breast Surgeons, 2012-2014. He has given numerous national and international invited lectures, and is a past committee and organising member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Breast meeting. He is the first Irish Surgeon to be certified in the Intercollegiate Cosmetic Surgery Certification Scheme.
